Carpeting Choices – Points to Consider

While tiny attention is paid to floor coverings in daily life, they’re a critical part of a home.  Whether carpet, hardwood flooring, laminate flooring or ceramic flooring, all of the different flooring options have different functions, different durability, different price points, and make a different feel in the room in which they’re in.  One of the most important industries within flooring is that of carpet.  It’s no wonder, since so many homes utilize carpeting in one or more rooms.  Choosing the right carpeting can be a daunting call, but with a little help, it can really be a fun project.

The first consideration for selecting carpet is the price range.  Carpets have a particularly wide price range, going from $10 – $15 per yard all the way to $40 per yard and beyond.  A basic measurement of the room is needed in order to tally the number of yards needed, which will help a decorator, homeowner, or builder in making the correct choice about price.  Keep in mind that price has a huge bearing on quality.  While it is of course possible to find quality choices on closeout or during super sales, with carpeting, you usually get what you pay for.  At any rate, decide the price range first, before shopping.  This permits a shopper to avoid the unlucky situation of falling madly in love with a certain choice only to find out that it’s wholly out of reach price-wise.

Another thing to be considered for selecting excellent carpet is the traffic pattern of the room to be carpeted.  Hallways and stairways clearly see lots of traffic, so that the carpeting that is selected must be long-wearing.  Family rooms, rec rooms, and play rooms also see heavy traffic volumes, making a durable carpet an absolute prerequisite.  A short pile will usually fit the bill here, as will berbers and the ever popular cut and loop styles.

Stain resistancy and color are also hugely important to a carpet choice.  For some, stain protection is not extremely important.  Virtually all carpets offer some type of stain protection, but the levels vary.  Empty nesters, for instance, tend to place less importance on stain protection that families with small children do.  Color is also critical to making a good selection.  Not only does it have a big effect on a room’s decorating scheme, but color also has the power to mask stains (dark or neutral carpeting), or to make them stand out (white or beige carpeting).
