How to install Roofing Felt

Roofing felt competed with sheet metal and shingles as a roofing material. Fire safety regulations added to the popularity of roofing felt at the turn of the century. The purpose of roofing felt is to provide a moisture and wind barrier to the roof, thereby supplementing the protection provided by the outermost weather bearing shingles

Roof felt like ice and water shield comes in 3-foot rolls. Roof felt based on wool felt or cellulose felt tends to a certain degree to absorb moisture or to give out moisture under varying climatic conditions. The variable moisture content will cause the felt to expand and contract, and this also may cause the formation of blisters due to steam occlusions. Roof felt is difficult to maneuver, too,” he said. They blow off and become a trash problem, and the edges are difficult to secure, so you have to staple or nail quite a bit.”.

Roofing felt, also known as builder’s felt or roofing felt paper, is the most commonly used form of roofing underlayment Roofing felt is available in a selection of materials, and each one is suited to a specific roofing shape. Roofing felt, or roofing sheets, is a waterproof barrier that’s placed between the roofing material and the roof sheathing. How To Install Roofing Felt

Begin by positioning the first layer at the eave of the roof, allowing approximately a one-inch drip edge over the gutter, from one end to the other. It’s best if this can be a individual piece but if a seam is a requirement, the overlap should be 4 to 6 inches. At both borders, hinging on whether it is the end of the roof or at a wall, the roofing felt should still be about two-inches longer than needed to serve as a drip edge or to go under metal flashing at a wall.

The 2nd roll should overlap the first piece by at the least 6 inches and if a seam is necessary, it shouldn’t be at the same spot as the seam in the 1st row. Seams should be at least 2 feet apart. If using roofing felt with grit on one side, install the grit-side up and use cold tar sealer in the overlap of the two rows.

When cuts to the roll are made, never make it on top of the old layer of felt. Mark the spot on the roll for the cut, and then place a cutting board under it to protect the existing surface from the sharp knife. This allows for a clean cut and won’t bring the knife into contact with the new roofing felt being installed. Continue adding layers to the remainder of the roof surface and when you reach the peak, allow the roofing felt to lie over the top as a first layer on the peak.
