Solar Power Systems: What Type is Right for You?

Three types of solar power systems are available to power your home.  Once you know how much energy you use you can decide how “hooked up” to the local power company you need to be.  That determines which system will work best.

The first type of system is an on-grid system. It’s connected to your local electrical company’s power grid but you use less power from them since you will be making up the rest with your own solar power system. This is good if you know you need more electricity than your solar power system can generate.

Beware, though. If the power company has an outage, your power will go out because your system won’t be able to switch over to just your solar power system. You can, however, sell extra power you generate to your power company.

If you want to be independent from the power company, or if you live in a remote area, then use an off-grid system.  It runs entirely from your solar power system and will store energy in its batteries. If there’s a black out in your area it won’t effect you because you’ll be running off your own system.

The third kind of solar power system is an on-grid plus battery system. This uses a battery back-up, solar energy and electricity from the local power company. This is a good alternative if you still need to use electricity from the power company because you use more than your solar power system can generate.

When there’s a blackout, you’ll still have power because this system can operate off the battery. You can also sell your extra energy back to you the power company, or you can just store it in your battery for your own use.

Any type you choose, a solar power system can help you become more energy independent, save you money and even put money back in your pocket.
