If you have basic carpentry skills and know how to use a ladder you can install your own house shutters. If you would rather have someone else do the job, you could easily employ a handyman to install some shutters on your home. However, installing house shutters is relatively easy and can be done by most do-it-yourselfers.
Do not be anxious at the thought of installing your new house shutters. If so many other people can do this easy job, so can you. You simply need to get acquainted with the basics. There are two recommended procedures to follow when installing your shutters. You can decide on an inside mount or an outside mount. It is preferred to install an inside mount that can be done right from your open window.
Inside mount installation
With an inside mount installation, the shutter attaches flush with the inside of the window opening on the window jamb. This is usually a simpler method of installation and is much preferred by professionals as it is cleaner and does not require any framing strips.
First, make sure the window jamb is solid. Then, you need to attach the shutter hardware with screws. This will require drilling a hole in the jamb at the appropriate areas so that the unit can be attached into the window jamb. The jamb has to be solid so that the shutter will be secure.
Now that you have mounted the hardware, you should check to see if the shutters are straight with the window. You will want to use a level to be sure that they are straight. Follow the instructions of the supplier as each type of inside mounted shutter is different. If you know how to use simple power tools, you will be able to quickly perform an inside mount for your shutters.
Outside mount installation
Obviously, an outside mount is connected to the outside of the window, usually into the trim, or even the wall. If you intend to install an outside mount for interior shutters, please don’t screw the unit into drywall unless it is anchored for the reason that the unit will just rip itself out of the wall. Some people would rather use an outside mount so that the installation can be not quite exact in terms of the measurements, which an inside mount will not allow. Of course this means that the outside mount does not look as finished as the inside mount.
Make sure you use a plumb bob and level when installing house shutters to make sure that they are straight. Your eyes might be fooled, but a level will not. You will need an electric drill, a set of apexes, and also toggles if you are installing on a wall panel without a stud.
Do not be hesitant to install your house shutters yourself. This is fairly easy and once you have installed one shutter, the rest will come very easily. As long as you have the required tools, namely, a screwdriver, drill, toggle mounts (if installing into drywall) and a level, you can complete this job easily and without much hassle.
